Rabbi Karp is an experienced teacher of Hebrew and Rabbinic Literature, and is available for group or private lessons in person, online or by phone. Students can learn how to read Hebrew, prepare for Bar and Bat Mitzvah reading and Torah chanting, or gain comprehension and understanding in Biblical, Rabbinic or Modern Hebrew. Courses and lessons are tailored to you and move at your pace, whether you are a beginner, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah student, studying at the college level, or a graduate, rabbinic or cantorial student preparing for comprehensive exams.
Biblical Hebrew
Know how to read Hebrew? Wish you could understand the language of the Torah? In 30 2-hour sessions, this course provides an introduction to biblical Hebrew for students with basic Hebrew reading skills. If you are a lover of language acquisition, this course is for you! We will learn pronouns, inflect nouns, conjugate verbs, and acquire adjectival awareness. Homework will be a must for this course; students who are prepared to work hard will be richly rewarded with the ability to read and translate much of the biblical narrative.
Hebrew Torah Study
Ever wish that you could study Torah in its original Hebrew? We will read, translate and discuss (in English) a different Hebrew passage from the Torah each week. Basic Hebrew comprehension is needed for this course – whether your knowledge is in Biblical, Modern, or some other type of Hebrew language. There may be a wide variety of Hebrew skills represented in the group: some may be able to read very slowly, and some will be able to understand many of the words. Students will learn how to use a biblical lexicon, and share in preparing the material for each week. If you have the equivalent of a year of formal Hebrew study beyond acquiring reading skills, this class is for you!
Reflections on Rabbi Karp's teaching:
"Rabbi Karp’s knowledge base is as deep as it is broad. In her courses, her expertise in Biblical Hebrew became evident, resulting in yet another request by her students for a new course - Biblical Hebrew. 14 students attend regularly, work hard, are challenged and rise to the occasion. Rabbi Karp brings history, clarity, humor, and a strong lack of “fear of failure” to her language class." Nina
"Molly showed her skill as a teacher as well as deep knowledge of Rambam, Rashi and other Illuminati of Jewish exegesis when teaching a graduate course about Biblical Interpretation. She was consistently well prepared and innovative in her approach to distance learning; so that the group, separated by thousands of miles, was still able to enjoy a collegial atmosphere." Joan
“I have employed Molly Karp on a number of occasions as a Hebrew tutor in order to help me navigate a number of challenges both as a working rabbi and during my period as a rabbinical student. Molly's knowledge of modern Hebrew and her knowledge as a rabbi provided a perfect combination.” Irwin
"My personal experience with Molly Karp was as her student in a Torah study class as well as in an intermediate Hebrew class. I can say, without reservation that she is the best Hebrew and Judaic studies teacher I have had the pleasure of studying with. She has a vast knowledge of the subject matter and is encouraging and motivating to her students. Her informal style puts one at ease and encourages one to return to class. She draws inferences from a vast number of sources, expanding the subject matter and balancing lessons with the latest commentaries. She is open and responsive to questions from the group and her answers are both reassuring as well as balanced in viewpoint. She is respectful towards her congregants and can listen attentively when needed. She is thoughtful and careful in her choice of words in her reactions." Diane
