The Days of Awe as a Journey of Transformation, Part II
Written by Rabbi Alan Lew z"l,
this book is designed for the weeks preceding
Rosh Hashanah and through Sukkot,
a traditional Jewish period of contemplation and repentance.
We will explore the idea that the real purpose of this time
is for us to open our hearts to God,
and try to re/connect to our faith with a passion and intimacy
that can resonate throughout the year.
No previous knowledge needed.
10 Tuesday mornings, 10:00 - 11:30 AM,
August 29, September 12, 19, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31,
November 7, 14.
Philo and Josephus: Living Jewish in a Non-Jewish World
Ancient Jews struggled to live Jewishly in the Greco-Roman world.
Philo of Alexandria was a Hellenistic Jewish philosopher
who lived from 20 BCE–50 CE in Alexandria.
He tried to reconcile the Hebrew Bible with Greek philosophy,
and shed light on obscure beliefs and practices of the Essenes.
Flavius Josephus was a 1st century priestly Jewish aristocrat
who led the Jewish forces against Rome in Galilee.
His book "The Jewish War" tells the story of ancient Israel
and early Judaism from the early second century BCE.
He witnessed the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple
and the siege at Masada,
and informs us about Pontius Pilate, the Essenes,
John the Baptist, Jesus, and early Christianity.
